Communication is a process that involves sending and receiving messages through verbal and non-verbal methods. Communication is a two-way means of communicating information in the form of thoughts, opinions, and ideas between two or more individuals with the purpose of building an understanding.
Building an understanding – this is the most important aspect of communication. Lack of communication makes room for assumptions. Those assumptions lead to misunderstanding, which furthermore damages the authenticity of the issue resulting in wrong decisions, which we may regret taking all our lives.
How important is communication? Communication is the essence of life. It allows us to build healthy relationships, whether at work or personal life. It helps us express our needs, experiences, and connect with others.
On the other hand, there are people who are bad communicators. Lack of communication could leave you unsure of where you stand. It can make you feel confused, lonely, or leave you with mixed signals because you don’t know how the other person is feeling. Lack of productive communication can also take a toll on your mental health over time.
If you have a difficult time communicating, you may find yourself not getting your needs met at work, with your family or friends, or in romantic relationships. You may also feel anxious, insecure, and lonely. Challenges with communication can make it difficult to maintain relationships or leave you feeling uncertain about where you stand in a relationship. Ineffective communication can lead to many misunderstandings or disagreements, too. This can include making mistakes or completing tasks incorrectly, having your feelings hurt, causing arguments, or distancing yourself from others.
Some signs of lack of communication includes:
- Shutting down
- Letting everything bottled up inside until you explode with anger or sadness
- Yelling or screaming
- Demonstrating passive-aggressive behaviour
- Not being clear about expectations or wants
- Giving the silent treatment
- Being physically or verbally abusive
Communication is a two-way street. Though lack of communication doesn’t have to be a deal breaker, as long as both the people in the picture are ready to work towards understanding each other. Improving communication is an ongoing process. But if a person takes responsibility, then it can save them from a lot of disappointment and regrets for life.
Communication can make or break a relationship. It is always advisable to put forth the truth regardless of your partner’s reaction rather than quoting it with lies or withdrawing from telling the truth. Avoiding the truth or a clear communication leaves a void in everyone involved. By communicating, you give your partner the choice to take it or leave it rather than continuing to live in limbo.
Communication is of greatest importance. It is important to share one’s thoughts and feelings to live a fuller and happier life.
